The Bamileke Tribe are among the artistic elite of the Cameroon Grasslands area. They are ruled by kings, and many of their masks are for royal festivities.

These special headdresses are made of bird feathers and has its own built-in self-storage capacity, as the entire headdress can be turned inside out, with the feathers protected by inverted fiber cap. This type of headdress is not limited to the Bamileke; it has long been used among the Tikar, Babanki etc. The feathers come from the type of birds widespread in the region and the most symbolic ones in the context of these cultures. They use dried feathers they put together in sewing them. They build the base with vegetable fibres.

Feather headdresses are worn by the King (Fon) and by other members of the palace during festivals. The most spectacular moment where the dancers wear this type of hat is during the dance of the Kuosi society, also called the elephant society. This prestigious society is led by the members of the kingship. They are the most indicating to wear this prestigious hat, for this hat with other form of ceremonial costume demonstrates the power and prestige of the chiefdom.

About us

Our green adventures started back in 2009 when we moved into a garden flat in East London.  We renovated a Japanese and Italian water garden from it's overgrown past but with no prior garden experience we got stuck into the books and learned everything there was to know about pruning shrubs and planting.  After the first year tidying the space up we were asked by a friend to join The National Garden Scheme.  The scheme recognises gardens of quality and raises money for charity.  It was a scary prospect of opening the garden to the scrutiny of the public.  So we opened up for the first time and it was so exciting, we received some great positive feedback and some helpful tips from the seasoned gardeners!  Subsequently, we opened our garden every year.
