Inspired by summer, one of our favourite colour trends is coastal. As we prepare to flock to the sandy shores for a weekend of vitamin sea, don’t you often wonder why you can’t feel like this all year round?

Let’s bring the coast into your home as we use three of our favourite coastal escapes to create a wave of seaside inspiration.

Why does the coastline calm us?

Long sunshine days, a bucket and spade and the sound of the lapping waves that lull us into sleep. Why does the ocean have such a calming effect on our wellbeing? It’s the combination of a placebo effect, the colour blue and fresh salty air in our lungs. As we mentally associate the shoreline with time off and an escape from our daily reality, we immediately feel relaxed and calm, even in a home that’s coastal-inspired far from the sea.

The colour blue combined with our memories of sweet summer holidays associates us back to carefree days, immediately making us feel at peace and boosting our inner creative child. Using blue in our home space may seem a little too traditional to acquire a coastal feel but on our mental effect? It may just welcome in that sea-serenity of the good ol’ days.

If you’re craving a seaside sanctuary, then prepare to live in a semi meditative state. The salty air, as well as the movement of the waves, has been seen to alter our brain waves, sending us into a natural “om”.

If these aren’t reason enough to fall in love with ‘la mer’ let’s show you a few more inspiring interior seascapes to lust over.

Cornwall landscape

Coastal creation in Cornwall

If St. Tropez is out of the question, then a trip to the town of Mawes, Cornwall may just do the trick. Its easy-going, stylish vibes ooze coastal flare, setting the stage for inspired interiors. Think sandy tones of natural weaves, rattan accents, and pops of rockpool blues. With this Mediterranean feel, it’ll be hard to remember you’re in England.

Colour palette

Adorn your walls with the shades of simple neutrals, think undertones of blues, pinks, and sandy yellows. Play with broad stripes and white cornices, or find a feature wall in shade lighter. It’s about letting your furniture and fabrics seek the shoreline and the neutrals keeping you on course.

Dress code

It’s chic-beach with a relaxed seaside vibe. Think cotton linens, a-line dresses, broad-brimmed hats and an accessory with stripes. If you must channel a 50s fashion icon, by all means, go ahead. This is your beach promenade dream. (Just keep the white tones high and neutrals front and centre.) Don’t leave your chic Merci Paris tote at home.

Decor

It’s a Cornish coastal-chic aesthetic. Everything set against a neutral palette is celebrated with vintage additions celebrating a timeless town. Add in bright accents and bold prints inspired by rock pools in hues of seaweed greens, Mediterranean blues and sunsets rays. Be sure to balance out your coastal-inspired tones with artworks, cushions and chairs that bring the space together as a celebration of the sea.

Bold and bright beaches of Brighton

There is nowhere more fun that brings out the spirit of the bright blue sea than boho-Brighton. Take inspiration from colourful beach huts, a carnival aesthetic and holidaymaker umbrellas dotted on the shoreline. It’s a town that’s alive in summer with a romance that’s not scared to show off its creativity. Bring this eclectic, retro feel of a beach town into your home, find self-expression in your wardrobe and let the colour of the mid-summers-day sea inspire you. It’s bold, it’s blue, it’s bright, it’s Brighton.

Colour palette

Think midday primary colours, of orange, blue, green and yellow. Mix mustards and pinks, reds and greens in patterns of flair and fun. Find a feature wall and paint it teal, or channel your inner boho-mermaid and find a coral that makes you dance and twirl.

Dress code

From whimsical dresses to bold print tees, this boho-coast is all about self-expression. Get creative with prints, and channel a retro vibe, think hats, graphic tees or tassels. Colour block, or splash print and paisley too, it’s a fashion faux par and it’s meant to be uniquely you.

It’s always on-trend but mixed with a little eclectic flair. Think reclaimed wood, vintage ornaments, brass fittings and bold prints all set against a bright feature wall channelling this coastal town.
