Dining al fresco is casual and fun, and picnics are perhaps more about the vibe than the food. Being able to get outside and enjoy some peace and quiet is important. After a long dark winter, it's a good way to get some vitamin D and reconnect with nature.

Having a picnic is also a fantastic way to enjoy some family bonding time. We can take our time, lounge, perhaps play some games, read, and soak up the sun's rays.

What to pack for a picnic

To pack for a picnic, you need the perfect picnic basket. We love this simple and chic basket from the Botanical Boys.

You will want to be creative with your presentation. For some ideas take a look at the I Am Nomad edit.

Choose the perfect picnic blanket. Something comfortable and machine washable. You could throw in some cushions for more comfort and an umbrella for shade. Don't forget to pack some napkins!

Where to picnic in London

Despite living in the city, there are still green, ideal places for a picnic in London. We’ve chosen a few of our favourites:

1. Kew Gardens

The Kew Gardens were first created in 1759, and showcase some of the best gardening art from the 18th to 20th centuries. Although you will be required to purchase an entry ticket, it certainly is worth it. Be ready to be dazzled by a large display of roses and some very rare plants. It’s the ideal picnic spot if you have the time to enjoy all that Kew Gardens has to offer.

2. Hampstead Heath

This wild green space in North London boasts spectacular city views, rolling meadows, ancient woodland and lush plant life. It is the ideal escape from the bustling downtown. Check out the surrounding spaces near Parliament Hill for a quieter atmosphere.

3. Holland Park

Neighbouring Kensington Palace Gardens, Holland Park is an undeniably picturesque picnic spot in London, featuring woodland and wildlife to sculpture and the Japanese-style Kyoto Gardens. It’s the perfect spot for a family picnic.

4. Soho Square

This pocket-sized patch of grass in Central London is the place to visit if you only have time for a short morning or afternoon picnic. Despite being in the middle of the city, you can still feel relaxed and connected to nature in Soho Square.

5. Primrose Hill

This hilltop park has panoramic views over Regent’s Park and the city beyond. So, pack your sandwiches and rosé and head to Primrose Hill to soak up some spectacular city views.

Don't forget to leave your picnic area as clean and litter-free as you found it. And very importantly, have fun!
